anything electronic like a diagnostic code reader is usually better if you buy it new(unless you personally know whoever’s selling it). other than that, it’s easy to tell the condition of most mechanical tools just by looking at them.

Most dentists have dental tools that they no longer use, the points broken off, the tension shot, etc. SO far, I have never asked for used tool and been turned down- never even been asked to pay- the tools are worthless to them by that time anyway. Of course ask a dentist that knows you, and explain why you want them.

There is no reason to buy dental tools though. Arts and crafts stores, hobby shops, hardware stores sell lots of tools that work just fine. Curved rug knives, different screw drivers and punches, styling tools, wood working kits and ceramics kits all have points and blades that are useful for working in almost any rock likely to have fossils.
For the hardest rock yo can use hard points on punches with exchangable replacement points- and rock chisels.
